Johnstown Jets Hockey: Singleness of Purpose
The Johnstown Jets Amateur Hockey Organization operates for the sole purpose of DEVELOPMENT. The Jets hockey program exists to provide aspiring amateur hockey players from West-Central Pennsylvania with an opportunity to grow and develop, not just as players and athletes, but most importantly, as people.
“WALKIN’ THE WALK,” AND OFFERING SOLUTIONS!
Many amateur hockey organizations speak of development, but few understand the ingredients necessary to mold solid hockey players. The process of proper player development begins with offering concrete solutions to all involved with the organization.
The Johnstown Jets hockey program seeks to develop individuals as players so as to enhance overall skill level and knowledge of the game of hockey in an effort to produce amateur players with a solid background and understanding of the responsibilities of a more complete, two-way hockey player.
In addition, the Johnstown Jets hockey program places important emphasis on enhancing overall athleticism. Through the use of off-ice overload and underload training principles, Jets players will experience an off-ice training routine geared towards strengthening specific hockey movements opposed to simply building pure muscle.
Lastly, the Johnstown Jets hockey program prides itself on shaping honest citizens who will represent the organization and their respective communities with the utmost amount of integrity.
TO COACH IS TO TEACH…
The Johnstown Jets hockey program will seek coaches with not just an experienced hockey playing background, but also a knowledge of overall skill development, thorough practice planning, on-ice tactics, proper off-ice training habits, and most importantly, the Jets will search for coaches who place heavy emphasis on citizenship and respect. The Jets hockey operations staff will entrust the role of developing its players on the shoulders of mature coaches who fit the criteria of being a leader in today’s evolving society. The coaches will be expected to take a hands-on approach, where teaching and offering solutions is the number one goal. Coaches will understand that the main priority of the Jets organization is to develop. Members of the Johnstown Jets coaching staff will recognize that winning is a result of, and most not be achieved in spite of proper player development.
PROPER PRACTICE LEADS TO PRODUCTIVITY
Success is a result of practicing properly. Jets players will experience up-tempo practices designed by the coach in an effort to keep the pace moving. At the same time, mistakes will be invited and then corrected. The coaches will worry about the mistakes, while each player will concern himself with overall effort.
Prior to all ice sessions, coaches will be encouraged to run their team’s through a sufficient off-ice stretch routine, which will consist of static and dynamic stretches designed to stimulate the nervous system, generate blood flow, make players sweat, and mentally prepare for the task at hand.
Goaltenders will receive heavy shots in the early stages of practice, in the form of fast-paced shooting drills where the players will be asked to skate and shoot. Emphasis will be placed on multi-skill work where working on passing while keeping the feet moving is demanded. Additionally, teams will adhere to an on-ice system of play, and will practice related concepts frequently.
Conditioning will take place at the appropriate time. Teams will condition at the conclusion of every practice, opposed to the beginning.
A BETTER ATHLETE MAKES A BETTER HOCKEY PLAYER…
The Johnstown Jets hockey program will devote an adequate amount of time to proper off-ice training. Players will spend time boosting speed via underload sprinting exercises designed to simulate on-ice situations in which the individual must skate from one area of the ice to another. By sprinting at various speeds, directions, and lengths, players will become better and faster on their feet. Coupled with proper skating drills which place importance on posture, overall speed will be enhanced over time.
Players will also be given an opportunity to enhance overall athleticism in the form of overload training. Through the use of pliometric exercises, players will embrace the concept of landing and exploding, which in turn, strengthens the muscles necessary for performing in the competitive, hockey arena. Players will begin by jumping and bounding on both legs. Over time, single leg, Russian based training principles will be introduced.
North Central Recreation Center features an upscale off-ice training facility equipped with a wide range of dumbbells, push-up blocks, training ladders, skip ropes, versa training balls, weighted bags for jumping and bounding, balance cushions designed to improve posture, medicine balls, a Russian jump box, slide board and the famous Power Skater dryland skating system. Players will participate in team oriented workouts while under the full supervision and direction of the team’s coaching staff.
BEING THOROUGH AND BECOMING COHESIVE IS FUN…
Johnstown Jets hockey players will enjoy spending time at the rink. Team activities will not only be productive, but will also be geared towards involving everyone and strengthening the bond of the individuals involved. Players will reap the benefits of structure and will push one another to improve day in and day out. Lasting relationships will be the result of intense preparation, thoroughness, and an unending focus on attention to detail.
The Johnstown Jets organization recognizes that team building, group goal setting, and open communication are all additional ingredients in the recipe for proper development.
